In 1995, New Line Cinema, a.k.a. "The House That Freddy Built," released a different kind of scary movie—one that they didn't, at the time, even acknowledge as a horror film. But SE7EN, as it's known on screen, may be the most chilling of all the serial-killer features to follow in the wake of THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, and set trends in the genre of its own.

Beginning with a striking, much-imitated title sequence by Kyle Cooper, the movie takes us into the depths of a city where a mysterious, moralistic villain begins punishing those he considers guilty of the Seven Deadly Sins, setting up a puzzle for a veteran detective (Morgan Freeman) and his up-and-coming partner (Brad Pitt) to solve.

Directing his second feature (from a twisty and twisted script by Andrew Kevin Walker) after the much-troubled ALIEN 3, David Fincher established his name and his style with this movie. With the help of cinematographer Darius Khondji, Fincher conjured a dark atmosphere that practically oozes off the screen. Missing any chance to catch SE7EN on the big screen is a sin all its own.
