The Shawshank Redemption

Stephen King may be best known for scaring the bejesus out of readers, but it’s his ability to deliver engrossing stories and sympathetic characters that’s really made him THE King of popular fiction. Case in point: THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, a story that takes us inside an altogether different kind of horror and shows us that life and hope can exist even inside that ugly reality.

In 1946, banker Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is wrongly convicted of a double murder and sentenced to life inside Shawshank State Prison in Maine. Thinking Andy is sure to crack under the pressure of life inside, fellow inmate Ellis Red Redding (Morgan Freeman) takes him under his wing. But Andy does not crack, even as he’s faced with the corruption and brutality of Shawshank. What unspools are years of friendships, torture, sadness, joy, and ultimately, redemption — all behind bars.

Adapted from a short story by King, SHAWSHANK may just be one of the best, fully realized translations of his work from page to screen. This is, of course, thanks in no small part to screenwriter Frank Darabont who wrote the screenplay and made his directorial debut with the film. Nominated for seven Academy Awards, SHAWSHANK has become a cultural touchstone possibly on par with THE GODFATHER and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. And like those other great cinema epics, big screen viewing is essential.

"Without a single riot scene or horrific effect, it tells a slow, gentle story of camaraderie and growth, with an ending that abruptly finds poetic justice in what has come before."
Janet Maslin, New York Times
